What happens if my NMLS license expires in Illinois?

If you’ve failed to meet your NMLS Online Continuing Education requirements, you can take a Late CE Course online to complete the renewal process.

According to the SAFE Mortgage Licensing Act, an MLO who doesn’t maintain a valid license for five or more years will have to retake the NMLS / SAFE MLO Test. This doesn’t mean that your tests will be exactly the same as they were five years ago. A lot changes over time, so it’s recommended that you use Prep2Pass to practice and simulate the test. Once you are ready to take the SAFE MLO Test again, you can enroll and schedule your test through the NMLS website. Have questions? The website is a great resource and to get live assistance call the NMLS Call Center at 855-665-7123.

The best way to ensure that your license never expires is to renew it on-time every single year. The deadline for renewal is December 31.

What is the deadline to complete CE in Illinois?

Illinois licensed MLOs cannot apply to renew their licenses if they haven’t completed the mandatory Illinois CE Courses. According to NMLS, the deadlines to complete Illinois NMLS Continuing Education are:

  • SMART Renewal Deadline: CE course reported to NMLS by Friday, December 10
  • At-Risk-to-Miss Renewal Deadline: Course reported to NMLS by Friday, December 17
  • Guaranteed to Miss Renewal Deadline: Course reported to NMLS on Friday, December 31

Illinois CE Courses must be completed by December 31. It is recommended that you do not wait to do your CE until the last minute, or else you’ll be at risk of being unable to renew your license. The state requires course providers to report your completion within seven days.
