How Long Does it Take to Become a VA Mortgage Underwriter?

Underwriters for Supervised Lenders do not need to be approved by VA. If you work for a Non-Supervised Lender, VA requires at least three years of experience in loan underwriting, pre-underwriting or processing, with at least one of those years spent making underwriting decisions for VA loans. Without the one year of VA underwriting decision experience, you must be certified by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) as a Certified Review Underwriter (CRU) or Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP).

VA Underwriting, Processing and Origination FAQs

What is VA Automatic Authority?

Automatic Authority is the VA’s designation allowing certain approved lenders to underwrite and close VA loans without prior VA approval on each individual loan. Lenders without this authority must have their VA loans reviewed and approved by the VA before closing. Our course covers what’s required to understand and work within both processes.

How long does it take to become a VA mortgage underwriter?

It depends on your lender type. Underwriters at Supervised Lenders don’t need individual VA approval. At Non-Supervised Lenders, VA requires at least three years of experience in loan underwriting, pre-underwriting, or processing, with at least one of those years spent making underwriting decisions specifically on VA loans. Without that year of VA-specific decision-making experience, you’ll need to be certified by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) as a Certified Review Underwriter (CRU) or Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) instead.

What's the difference between a Supervised and Non-Supervised Lender?

A Supervised Lender is a federally regulated financial institution (such as a bank or credit union) whose VA underwriters don’t require individual VA approval. A Non-Supervised Lender doesn’t have that same regulatory oversight, so its underwriters must meet the VA’s specific experience requirements, or hold MBA certification, before underwriting VA loans independently.

Where can I find current VA loan guidelines?

VA guidelines are frequently updated through VA Circulars, and the information isn’t always consolidated in the main handbook, it often requires searching years of individual circulars to find what’s current. Our course does that work for you, providing in-depth, up-to-date training on VA guidelines so you don’t have to track down scattered circulars yourself.

What formats is this course available in?

The VA Underwriting, Processing and Origination course is available as a quarterly live webinar (8 hours, presented in two 4-hour segments), a pre-recorded online course you can complete on your own schedule, or as private webinar or on-site training for your team. We can also deploy the course directly on your company’s Learning Management System (LMS).
