How Long Does it Take to Become a VA Mortgage Underwriter?

Underwriters for Supervised Lenders do not need to be approved by VA. If you work for a Non-Supervised Lender, VA requires at least three years of experience in loan underwriting, pre-underwriting or processing, with at least one of those years spent making underwriting decisions for VA loans. Without the one year of VA underwriting decision experience, you must be certified by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) as a CRU or AMP.
